About Clacton On Sea
In 1871, Peter Bruff, an Essex railway engineer and land developer, along with steamboat owner William Jackson and a group of businessmen, built a pier and the Royal Hotel (now converted to flats) on farmland adjacent to low gravelly cliffs and a firm sand-and-shingle beach near the villages of Great and Little Clacton. Clacton-on-Sea was founded in 1872 and planned out fairly haphazardly over the next several years, with a central ‘great’ boulevard (initially Electric Parade, now Pier Avenue) and many previously rural lanes and tracks, such as Wash Lane.
Plots and streets were sold in pieces to developers and speculators. The Great Eastern Railway, which already served the well-established resort of Walton-on-the-Naze along the coast, built a spur to Clacton-on-Sea with a connection at Thorpe-le-Soken in 1882.
