Robert Gray established Gray’s Almshouses on East Street in 1615 for destitute single women. The red brick structures are adorned with Robert Gray’s 1635-dated coat of arms as well as the Merchant Tailors’ coat of arms. A modest chamber that serves as the chapel with painted walls and old seating. It is a grade I listed building, according to English Heritage. In the 12th century, St. Margaret’s Almshouses was established as a colony for lepers. The hospital was taken under the care of Glastonbury Abbey in the late 13th century, and in the early 16th century, it was renovated as almshouse. The structure remained in use as almshouses, maintained by a nearby parish, from 1612 to 1938. It was transformed into a hall of offices for the Rural Community Council and space for the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen in the late 1930s. Later, it started to fall apart, but the Somerset Buildings Preservation Trust and Falcon Rural Housing bought it and renovated it so that it could be used as four social housing units. It is a listed structure of category II.
