About Hartlepool
Hartlepool Art Gallery is housed within Christ Church, a restored Victorian church designed by Edward Buckton Lamb (1806-1869) and erected in 1854. The gallery’s temporary exhibitions change often and showcase works by local artists as well as the permanent Fine Art Collection, which Sir William Gray created. The gallery also serves as a tourist information centre for Hartlepool.
On the Headland sits the Heugh Battery Museum. In 1860, it was one of three batteries built to safeguard Hartlepool’s port. The battery was decommissioned in 1956 and is currently managed by the Heugh Gun Battery Trust, which houses an artillery collection.
The National Museum of the Royal Navy is located in Hartlepool (The other is in Portsmouth). The museum, formerly known as The Historic Quay, is a recreation of an 18th-century seaport and home to Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience. The exhibition’s centrepiece is a sailing frigate, HMS Trincomalee.
