Gloucester History
Gloucester Cathedral, located along the river in the city’s northwestern outskirts, was founded in 681 as an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter. It is where King Edward II and Walter de Lacy are buried. The cathedral (particularly its cloisters) appeared in the films Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for corridor sequences. The crypt appeared in a scene in the Sherlock Christmas special. The Norman prior’s chapel is attached to the deanery.
In 1555, the Bishop of Gloucester, Bishop John Hooper, was executed in St Mary’s Square outside the Abbey gate by Queen Mary I.
From earlier eras in Gloucester’s history, a handful of gabled and half-timbered homes from the mediaeval and Tudor periods have survived. The Tolsey (town hall) stood at the intersection of the four main streets until it was replaced with a contemporary structure in 1894. Except for the New Inn on Northgate Street, none of the original public buildings remains. It is a timbered structure with huge outdoor galleries and courtyards. It was erected approximately 1450 by monk John Twyning.
