Agriculture-related sectors, such as the making of traditional brews and ales, were among the first. Lime-burning and chalk-mining have their uses as well. Sir Martin Frobisher had the refining done on Powder Mill Lane in Dartford upon his return in 1578 from Frobisher Bay in the Canadian Arctic with a supposed shipment of gold-bearing ore. However, the ore was found to be worthless and was used for the road surface. Sir John Spilman established the first paper mill in England in Dartford in 1588 at a location near Powder Mill Lane, and it quickly grew to employ 600 people, providing a vital source of local employment.
At the time, iron-making on the Weald was in full swing, and iron ingots were shipped to Dartford, where Godfrey Box, an immigrant from the Low Countries, established England’s first iron-slitting mill at Dartford Creek in 1595. In 1785, John Hall, a millwright, established a workshop in Lowfield Street and began producing engines, boilers, and machinery (some for the local gunpowder factory run by Miles Peter Andrews and the Pigou family), laying the groundwork for J & E Hall, an engineering firm specialising in heavy engineering, later refrigerating equipment, and, for 20 years beginning in 1906, vehicle production, as well as lifts and escalators.
