About Chelmsford
Chelmsford is the county town of Essex and has served as the county seat since 1215. It houses Essex County Council’s offices at County Hall on Duke Street, as well as Chelmsford City Council’s headquarters on Duke Street. Essex Police headquarters are located in Kingston Crescent in the city’s Springfield district.
Chelmsford was part of the historic Essex hundred of Chelmsford. It was established as a municipal borough in 1888 under the Municipal Corporations Act of 1882. The borough was expanded in 1934 by adding 1,659 acres (6.71 km2) from Chelmsford Rural District, which included portions of the parishes of Broomfield, Springfield, Widford, and Writtle. The municipal borough was dissolved in 1974, and its former territory was amalgamated with the majority of the remaining rural district to form the bigger Borough of Chelmsford, which was awarded city status by Royal Charter in 2012.
Visit Chelmsford’s top tourist destinations with your family for a fun day out. You can learn about the city’s history at the Chelmsford Museum or see a cricket match at the County Ground.
