Cambridge History
Several big council estates added to the city’s expansion between the 1930s and the 1980s. The estates of East Chesterton, King’s Hedges, and Arbury, where Archbishop Rowan Williams resided and served as an assistant priest in the early 1980s, have had the most influence.
During World War II, Cambridge served as an important east coast defence centre. During the war, the town was transformed into a military hub, with an R.A.F. training base and regional headquarters for Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Hertfordshire, and Bedfordshire built. The town itself avoided German bombing strikes, which were mostly aimed at the railway, largely unscathed. There were 29 fatalities and no historic structures were destroyed. A secret gathering of military commanders at Trinity College in 1944 lay the groundwork for the Allied invasion of Europe. During the war, Cambridge functioned as an evacuation centre for over 7,000 London residents as well as elements of the University of London.
